A Business Owner’s Guide to Staying Motivated During Difficult Times

Guide To Staying Motivated

Part of building a successful business is keeping it going in hard times. Here is a business owner’s guide to staying motivated during difficult times.

Did you know that 33 percent of small business owners say that they don’t have the same motivation that they once did when they first started their business? That motivation has to be even worse when they’re going through a difficult time.  That shouldn’t be surprising at all for anybody who has been hard hit with tough times.

Building a successful business is hard work and when you’re going through a hard time it can be tough to keep it going. Luckily for you, we’ve created a guide to staying motivated even through difficult times.

Tough times for businesses can seem like they’re never going to end. The good news is that bad situations can always be solved as long as you have the will and determination to see them through.

Keep reading for our guide on how business owners can stay motivated during difficult times.

Focus on the Positives

Owning a business means that you might go through some hard times which can bring on a lot of changes. The thing is that we can’t fear change even if it might seem like a negative thing at first.

Think of all of the positive things that could come from a bad situation. When you think of the positives this can definitely help to improve your motivation.

Sometimes the positives in a situation might not be as big as we think when it comes to working. They might be that you woke up this morning or that you’re looking forward to what you packed for lunch. Whatever gets you excited and motivated is what you should focus on.

Fake It

Have you ever heard of the saying “fake it until you make it?” In difficult situations, it is going to be tough putting on a happy face especially when it could be your business on the line.

Put on a happy face to fake all of the motivation and confidence that you need. It might be tough when you’re first starting out but you’ll find that after a while the fake motivation will turn into real motivation.

You should also try to surround yourself with positive team members during tough times as well. You’ll find that your relationships with staff members are even better when you have a confident attitude even if it started out as a fake one. Good relationships are a great way to get you through these difficult times as a business owner.

Work on Your Goals

During difficult times where you’re feeling unmotivated, you should work on setting business goals and make sure to try to achieve them. If you feel like your goals are currently unattainable, then break them down and work on reaching them one by one.

You’ll find that when you set smaller goals and work at them as a ladder that you will be much more motivated. Being successful and having something to show for it is an awesome way to increase your motivation at work.

On the other hand, if you are going through a tough time, then you should make sure that your goals align with that as well. Make sure that your goals fit into the resources you have and that you will be able to accomplish them with the amount of time you’re allotted.

One goal you might want to work on is your digital marketing strategy. Social media marketing can be a free way to reach your target audience and get more sales.

Create a To-Do- List

A great way to get more motivation is by writing down everything that you need to get done in a day, week, or even in a month on a to-do list. This is a great way to have an itemized list of all of your tasks especially if you’re a very busy person going through a tough time.

You can see every task that needs to be done so you don’t forget anything. One great way to structure a to-do list is by ranking each item on the list from easiest to most difficult. This way you will know which tasks to get out of the way first or which tasks will take a bit more of your time.

When you write a to-do list, then you can also have the satisfaction of crossing things off of your to-do list when you finally complete them. For many people, this gives them the motivation to get things done.

The best part is that once you start to get things checked off your to-do list, then the list doesn’t seem as big and daunting as it once was. This is a huge motivator especially if you’re going through a difficult time with your business.

Don’t Forget Your Own Needs

Sometimes as a business owner, you might forget to focus on yourself. You could be prioritizing your business over your home life and even your own needs in general.

Remember that you could work none stop 24/7 and still never finish everything that you need to do. Take breaks when you need them. Make sure that you have a quitting time every day and you take time to relax for yourself and for your family.

Whatever pressing matters that your business needs to be handled will still be there tomorrow.

Make sure that you’re getting adequate nutrition, exercise, and enough sleep every night. You should also make sure that you’re spending time with your family and have enough time to kick back and relax.

Focusing all of your time and energy can just lead to burning out too quickly. It will surely make all of your motivation go away and won’t help resolve your tough situation any quicker.

  1. Great article. I am currently building an online business and I have faced these motivation issues more than once. When you first start working on your business you are super excited but slowly your routine transitions towards steady daily work and sometimes you have to do task you don’t particularly like but they are essential to growing your business. I have bookmarked this page because it can come in handy in the future.

    1. Horatius, that’s absolutely right, “that when you first start working your business, you feel the enthusiasm, feeling so motivated, before you know it, the excitement has evaporated. It is a common experience. That’s why we encourage people to chose a niche or a career they know they have the passion for. If it is something you’re passionate about, no matter the obstacles, you can still remain motivated and keeping striving.

But at the same time, we can’t rely on our feelings, because it fluctuates. Instead, we can rely on our inner strength and have some positive energies to connect to, read some good books of your choice, and anything that you think that can keep you regularly energized to pursue your dreams.

      Thanks for your kind comment.

  2. It is so hard to get motivated when you do not get to live the life you used to live. This pandemic has a big impact with my stress and even impact my marriage. Surprise 24/7 with your spouse for the first time like forever.

I agree that staying focus and positive is important. It is my Why to remind me what I am doing to get to where. I do not think that I can get anything productive done it my day without my to do list. That is the first thing that I write in the morning or the last night just to plan my day to go towards my goal.

Great tips, I am faking it to make it everyday!

    1. Hi Nuttanee, thanks for stopping by at my site, and for your candid input I agree with you that the Pandemic Lockdown was a very stressful and confusing time for so many families. Parents and their children have to relearn how to live together from day today. I mean, it was hard for so many in different ways. The good news is that a lot of lessons have been learned at all levels.

I hear you, managing a relationship is a task. We just have to make up our mind to do all we can to maintain the emotional health of the relationship, before negative emotions start building up. I believe too that have a positive mindset can as well help us to choose our battles, as to remain focused on productive activities and our dreams.

Again, thanks for commenting, I hope to keep visiting. Please share if you found it useful.

  3. Hi there,

There has never been a better time to come across a post like this. I think pretty much everyone who runs a business right now has experienced a serious challenge to their ability to stay motivated.

That in itself is a problem because you have to be motivated to stay in business. It’s not like when you are employed by a company, because you can sometimes still get by despite a lack of motivation. However, as a business owner who maybe employs others, you have to ensure you’re not just motivating yourself, but others too. That’s why faking it is definitely a good one to master, because sometimes you have to.

    Thanks for sharing.
