As we can see, 2021 has begun as a marathon. Many have taken off with a speed of 120 MPH, in other to catch up with a goal of 160 MPH. What’s the goal or the catch? Great question! The catch is that many people are in a hurry to have success. They want to catch the great feelings associated with success.
It’s good to be ambitious and to work hard in other to achieve our ambitions. But we need to apply knowledge by learning how to avoid the stumbling blocks that are on the way to success. Therefore, there are some adjustments or tweaks that are necessary, as we pursue our goals.
If you are aware by now, you will realize that there are some stumbling blocks or hindrances that can cause delays, lack of progress, or underachievement of our goals. So, in this article, we are going to highlight a few of them.
Lack of Self-knowledge: How self-aware are you? Do you make an honest assessment of your abilities and inabilities? In other words, do you know your strengths and weaknesses, and passion before you make some career, job, academic, relations, and business decisions? Of course, we are endowed with potentials, there is no doubt about it. But if we don’t understand how to use them, are we still remain limited to what we can do or achieve. By that, I’m suggesting that your spirit soul, and body need to be in agreement with your decisions based on your knowledge of who you are and what you want. Making sure that you’ve consulted with your core self. Once you’re convinced within you of what you are capable of, just go on and take a step.
The aim, is for you to find out based on your self-awareness, that you’ll have the abilities needed for the goal you’ve set up or about to set up. Certainly, it is through your self-awareness that will help you to discover if the journey you want to embark on is a good fit for you or not.
It will help you determine if the project, program, relationship, business, career, or ministry, be it anything at all, that you are to do is actually what you really need to do. That means, that your decisions must take into consideration the resources, skills, environment, or location, age, and so forth. Because of your self-knowledge, you will always be self-confident in your decision-making.
You will be able to know and you will have peace of mind whatever the decision or the outcome of your decisions. Oftentimes, because of a lack of self-awareness, many people underate or overate themselves. And that is one of the causes of some of the failures some people experience. “Know yourself.” It is your life.
No other person will live it for you good or bad. No one else will succeed for you. There is no need to pretend to be what you are not, just to impress others. You can’t be shining outwardly and be burning inwardly! If you do what you are capable of, you will achieve the results you aspire.
When you are self-aware, you will not allow anyone else to talk you into something that you are not sure of; or interested in. I believe that so many people have allowed part of their lives to be lived or controlled by others. Often time, if we allow the choices to be made by either our families or circumstances, regret, will follow. Thank God for today’s young people. The majority of them have an independent mind. You can’t detect their life for them. And they will tell you right away to keep off.
Avoid the Stumbling Block of Taking the Short Cuts

So many have instinctively decided to chose to follow all the nukes and corners to get money these days. Money and materialism have become an idol to be worshipped by many. Likewise, some have chosen the shortest, easiest, and quickest means to achieve their so-called success. Hence we have such a dramatic increase in the crime wave. ID thefts, scammers, get-rich-quick skims, human-trafficking, drug trafficking, and other various evil activities and means of making money have become so rampant.
As we can see Using shortcuts to acquire wealth or any position of power will make such success or position unsatisfactory. Oftentimes, people who are reckless and so obstinate, and absorbed in their greed for making money, by all means, don’t’ pay any attention to rules. Because they lack integrity and honesty. Today, look at how difficult it is for us to do online business because people are so untrustworthy.
In addition, don’t be afraid to Make U-Turns at Dead-Ends: We have a dream for our lives, which we understand better than anyone else. We know what we want, why we want it, and when we want it. Therefore, it is our decision to make when we run into dead-ends unawares.
Again, take time to think about why the dead ends were experienced. It is not a time to thrown in the towel, thinking that it’s over. Instead, consider it a learning process and time to learn what needs to be dropped or included in your next move.
Avoid Shifting Blame When You are experiencing Sumbling Bloks,
It is very important, not to resort to blame when we run into dead-ends; because if we do, we will miss some important lessons we ought to learn. Yes, it is our human nature to find whom or what to blame when we fail at something. We can blame the system, the coach, the type of device we bought, or the wrong program, or we can even blame our spouses, our family, friends, pets, etc. Remember during our school days how we boast when we made a solid ‘A” in the final exam. We burst with joy and say something like “yeah, I did it! Contrast it with what we say or what another student who failed will say. He or she will shift the blame. Or in most cases, the student can indulge in self blames, calling himself all the bad names in the book. We don’t suppose to do that either. Instead, we are to learn and understand the reason behind the failure.
So, the point is to avoid blaming yourself too much or shifting the blames to others. Instead, reflect, think, analyze and accept the corrections and be prepared to do better next time based on the lessons you’ve learned from the mistakes made; and be ready to move on. Do not allow any kind of failure to define who you are. Be it relationship failure with a boss, partner, spouse, parent, project, etc. Learning how to handle failure, disappointment, and betrayal is a very good lesson to learn. No matter the level, nothing is guaranteed. I think the athletes and politicians can attest to this fact better.
We will get it once we take care of some of the stumbling blocks or hindrances on our way. So today, let us consider a different route that will lead us to success by learning how to conquer some of the common causes of failure. Rather than focusing on success. I hope we will travel together to success destination at last. And my suggestion is that we have to cooperate and learn together.
Sometimes, our failure can result as a result of a lack of a clear vision of what really you want to achieve and what it will take to achieve it. Putting into consideration, your abilities, skills, interests, age, resources, location or environment, background, and so forth. It is one thing to learn new skills and yet another to have the interest and ability to make use of the skills.
So, in this regard, I will highly recommend you bring in personal honest consultation with yourself. Tell yourself the truth. And this is why we should be careful in others not to overestimate or underestimate our abilities, in making the final decisions about our career or change of career.
So, in this article, I want us to think about our individual abilities, talents, skills, social connections, backgrounds, interests, hobbies, and things like that, as part of the package that failure and success are made up of. And decide what our best options are before we make some crucial decisions towards our dreams. Because, success is what we have to succeed for ourselves, likewise a failure. Just like any exam, it is the student that has to pass it or fail it.
Avoid Overestimating or Underestimating Your Abilities and Do What You Can Do Best
I have seen it, heard it, and noticed the frustration and lack of progress when one’s job isn’t the person’s calling. Sometimes, even in business just as in fashion, some people want to follow the trend. Go for what is popular. And they do it without putting into consideration, some of the points I have repeatedly made earlier.
And under such a situation, you’re expected to make the six figures, or the $10/month like others who really know that that is what they are capable of. Along the line, the spirit of frustration, loss of enthusiasm weighs the mind down. I have heard jobs that aren’t my interest, I did them, just to make the money, but the satisfaction wasn’t there.
I also know, that for so many of us that we all have parts of our job or some areas of online business that aren’t our favorite. I have to say this, there is nothing wrong with making mistakes, taking a wrong exit, or joining the wrong lane. What is wrong or will be wrong is not having the ability to see the mistakes, and to make a U-Turn when headed in the wrong direction. Life is about discovery. What many of us know today, we didn’t know them some 5 – 10 years ago. And the more we learn and grow the more we adjust, change, and prepared we are to pursue our dreams.
So, my word of encouragement to somebody here is to take stock of who you are, what you want, how to get it, and weigh it with your abilities and inabilities. And then, decide. Know that all that glitters are not gold. Be true to yourself. And this is exactly how I want to approach my decisions going forward. You made the decisions, you can as well redecide if you become aware of what is not working well for you or in your life.
For instance, there are some who joined a particular program or choose a particular field due to the exotic nature. It’s like a student whose ability and talent are more of general art, but because his or her friends are doing well in med school, maybe feeling so good about their future profession as a doctor, and the art student wants to switch to do medicine, without putting into consideration other factors.
Then, maybe the student will be convinced probably that only persistence, is necessary to do well in medicine. If the person is not able to realize that he is not science-oriented, that he or she lacks the science background, knowledge, and interest, the student might end up losing his money, time, and energy, pursuing a course that she is not meant to do well with.
Why because he is not aware of his/her abilities. As I look at what is happening in online marketing, I see a similar lack of self-awareness. It is as if some people are made to promote other people to success while they experience nothing but failure. As Norther an English poet once said, that, “Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, inasmuch as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterward carefully avoid.”
It is my belief that we can achieve success better and faster when we understand who we are and what we are capable of. The road to success is not paved with gold.
Finally, let us avoid the stumbling block of quieting so soon. Quitting when we are ahead will seem stupid and quitting when we are behind can be extra stupid. We require the wit to hold on while we can, and it also requires wit to quit when it is absolutely necessary to do so. We can’t stop trying during the trying times. So learn how to fight better!
This such as an inspiring article. ‘don’t be afraid to Make U-Turns at Dead-End’ is a statement that made it for me because most times we find ourselves stuck on dysfunctional plans. I think there is a need for many of us to know that change of plan does not mean you are giving up.
Hi Bogadi, thanks so much for providing your kind and candid comment to this post. Everyone can fall at something. It is not uncommon, but what matters is how we react to failures or setbacks in our quest to achieve our dreams. Thanks for your excellent contribution.
One of the first things everyone should consider is to stop postponing things that you can do today until tomorrow.
If we don’t believe in ourselves, no one will. But at the same time, we shouldn’t overestimate our abilities. We need to learn our strong and week sides and take advantage of them. Instead of spending time trying to achieve things in the wrong field, which will only bring frustration afterward!
Hi Violeta, and thanks so much for stopping by to offer your valuable comment. Certainly, there are small things we don’t pay attention to that pose as stumbling blocks for achieving our goals.
This is exactly right. If you don’t know yourself, you won’t find true success. Any success you have will be shallow and not connected to your true purpose. It will be unfulfilling. Knowing yourself is the first step in discovering what you truly want, what your talents are, and how you can help others. How can you share your gifts with the world if you yourself haven’t discovered them?
I think a lot of people are just interested in a quick buck as you mentioned. But this will only lead to short-term money and you will have damaged other people as well as yourself. Instead, become self-aware, build character, and live in your values and integrity. That is true success! Thanks for the reminder!
Hi Nicole, Thanks so much for your excellent comment on this post. You connected the points so beautifully. Daring to live a life of integrity, and building one’s character is more satisfying than ill-gotten wealth. Taking any kind of shortcuts to seek success can’t grant satisfaction or peace of mind. As stated, our success starts with our self-awareness.
